Wart Removal Q & A

What are warts?

Warts are soft tissue growths on your skin caused by human papillomavirus (HPV). They might develop as:

  • Plantar warts on your feet
  • Common warts on your fingers
  • Flat warts near areas you shave
  • Genital warts

Warts can appear as small, grainy, flesh-colored bumps on your skin. They might look like white, pink, or tan bumps that feel rough or are sprinkled with black dots.

Warts can be embarrassing or a sign of a sexually transmitted disease. Sometimes warts go away on their own, but in other cases, medical treatment is necessary to get rid of them. Dr. Festa and his team offer a wide variety of wart removal options.

How do warts spread?

Warts are spread from person to person by skin-to-skin contact, shared objects, or sexual contact. You can get warts by walking barefoot in communal areas or touching the skin of someone with warts. The virus spreads through tiny breaks in your skin. Genital warts are spread through genital contact with an infected person.

Groups at a higher risk of developing warts include children, young adults, and people with weak immune systems. Avoid picking at or shaving warts, as they can spread to other areas of your body.

Which wart removal treatments are available?

Dr. Festa and his Rejuvenation Center for Mind and Body team can diagnose warts by examining your skin and taking a biopsy in some cases. They offer numerous wart removal treatments including:

Acid treatment

Using prescription-strength salicylic acid helps remove warts layer by layer. Dr. Festa might recommend combining salicylic acid with freezing, or using stronger acids like trichloroacetic acid to eliminate your wart.

Cryotherapy

During cryotherapy, or freezing, Dr. Festa uses liquid nitrogen to freeze off your wart. After about a week, wart tissue sloughs off.

Laser treatment

Laser treatment helps Dr. Festa burn, or cauterize, your wart to make it die and eventually fall off.

Excision

During wart excision, Dr. Festa numbs the treatment area and cuts out your wart. The procedure is fast and painless.
